Why is it important to listen to your cravings?

Hello everyone! Continuing on the topic of extreme hunger, I'd like to talk about cravings.
A craving for food is something we always get every once in a while, whether it is chocolate, ice cream, cake, pizza etc. We think that it is unhealthy to respond to these cravings, but experts have actually stated that responding to them and allowing you to have what you want is beneficial in the long run! For instance, eating what you want in moderation allows us to prevent eating an entire bag of chips by ourselves because we have restricted ourselves for too long. However, responding to your cravings everyday can become unhealthy.
When I was recovering from my ED, I literally ate so many sweets (cookies, cake, chocolate etc) because I was struggling with anorexia nervosa and I only ate a minimal amount of food which included just veggies and fruit. It got to the point that I could not even have a slice of bread by myself because I was terrified of gaining weight. My body was so deprived of the nutrients that I needed, and I limited myself to an excessive degree.
Remember, you want your life to be happy and to have a healthy lifestyle, not simply a healthy diet that rend you miserable.
Now, I eat that cookie/ice cream/ drink regardless of the time of the day because I want to. Aka I got a oreo mcflurry last night ( I wanted a hot fudge sundae but they were out so sad:( ) and I do not freak out or worry about eating them or their calories and such(:
Hope y'all are enjoying the beautiful weather outside!!
-C.
